RV fans that enjoy traveling to South Padre Island on the south tip of Texas will notice a change next time they cross the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway.
The popular Destination RV Resort on the Island was recently purchased by KOA Kampground of America and a few changes are taking place there.
A few faithful RVers may remember new park managers Tom and Stacie Brooks, who have worked for the national chain for over ten years at various parks. For the past four years they managed a KOA property in the Florida Keys. Other KOA properties they have managed include parks in Santa Cruz, California; Fiesta Key, Florida; and Bar Harbor, Maine.
"We love it here on South Padre," said Tom. "This is a real vacation spot. We're still getting our feet on the ground here and evaluating what needs to be done."
KOA owns and operates about 25 corporate parks including the SPI location, but the chain consists of 450 franchise locations nationwide.
There are big plans in the works for the park in the near future. One addition will be a children's playground. Brooks reports while the park will still cater to winter Texans during the season, it is their goal to become more of a family park the remainder of the year.
The new South Padre Island KOA features 208 full-service sites. There is also a 25-meter heated pool, a laundry, a restaurant, an exercise room, a boat launch, and a lighted fishing pier.
