|Itís been a long time coming say enthusiasts who are anxiously awaiting the grand opening of the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse at the World Birding Centerís Hidalgo wildlife area.
Supporters and dignitaries will gather Saturday, April 14, for the official grand opening and dedication ceremonies which will open the new trails to areas in the adjacent federal refuge areas.
The Hidalgo Pumphouse, a wing of the World Birding centerís series of Valley facilities, is a tribute to Valleyís early 20th century transition into a dynamic agriculture powerhouse. The historic pumphouse is a symbol of the Valleyís past and is now a landmark for its future as a valuable ecological and environmental attraction.
On a break from cross-border shopping excursions, visitors to this museum on the Rio Grande can learn about the steam-driven pumps that transformed Hidalgo County into a year-round farming phenomenon. Visitorís can also wander the museum grounds where hummingbird gardens are planned, and where many of the Valleyís amazing bird species are regular visitors as well. Opening of the new trails enhance the facilityís ability to meet the growing demand for green areas for active and passive recreational opportunities for the growing population of residents and visitors.
The new trails are just one of many recent and planned improvement projects for the pumphouse park. A butterfly garden is under constant development and the hummingbird garden is a new addition to the offering at the facility as well.
Next door to the museum, more than 600 acres of U.S. Fish & Wildlife Department land is being replanted with native Huisache, Texas Ebony, and Anacua, and will be an important birding tract when opened as part of the WBC. Plans are to also to replant museum grounds with the types of native trees, shrubs and flowers that attract Valley birds and butterflies.
The grand opening event gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14th. The public is invited to attend.
