Get Ready for the Beach Biker Invasion!
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- RVers and early Winter Texans hoping to spend a quite weekend on South Padre Island in the middle of October are in for a real surprise! The 2005 Roar By The Shore Motorcycle Rally gets underway Oct. 13-16 as thousands of Harley enthusiasts and motorcycle buffs join in the annual bash and converge on this Texas beach destination to kick up their heels and let their hair hang down - literally.
While the roar may be unbearable at times, the fun makes up for it. Road rallies and other races, bike competitions, a tire toss, tattoo contest, scavenger hunt and a parade are all on this year's activity agenda as record crowds are expected to converge on the tiny island community.
Heralded as one of the most successful motorcycle rallies in the Southwest, BIKEFEST offers the perfect opportunity to view the many sleek and beautiful motorcycle designs that annually show up for the rally. It's a time for showing off your ride, and there will plenty of custom bikes as well as the usual assorted Harleys and other commercial brands to view.
This year's event features a professional bike builders contest where some of the most unique bikes ever designed will be showcased in a competition that will net the winner some real cash.
Live entertainment includes a tribute to the Eagles and the classic rock group 38 Special. Both performances will be held at the Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark. Also highlighted will be well known hypnotist Ken Whitener.
The three day event also features a number of special South Texas bike rides, including one that leaves the Island and heads south to Brownsville, across the Texas-Mexico border into Matamoras and eventually back to the Island. The Mexico Fiesta ride is an annual event that is well received by our friends across the border, who line the streets to watch the long parade of American bikers scream down village streets.
Another major highlight of this year's event will be when American Daredevil and record holder Bubba Blackwell will attempt to jump a line of Budweiser trucks on the Island's main strip, Padre Blvd. That event happens Friday evening at 5p.m.
The SPI Bikefest is an event in its eleventh year. Organizers report each year the event has grown and report they are expecting a record crowd once again this October.
